Here, here!!! I completely agree!!! What is the point of eye contact if you do not know what to do with it? If a child learns how fun, informative, surprising, reassuring, etc. it can be to read someone's face, he or she will WANT to give eye contact because it serves a purpose. Like you, I found Dr. Gutstein's work on this very enlightening!!!

Hi-
I have enjoyed discovering your blog and reading your posts today....I would like to invite you to join my new social online community for parents with a child on the spectrum. My husband and I created it to help families connect and your perspective and ability to convey a point would be a huge asset to the mix. Would love to have you join us.

Cheers-

It was my son's psychiatrist just the other night who insisted that the CJ look at him while he was giving him a directive. CJ said he was listening two times. The psychiatrist told him he wasn't listening because he wasn't looking at him! Of course, CJ started into meltdown over it. We left right away and won't be returning!

OMG! I've always been a 'look at me' mother. I really need to change how I approach my son! Thanks for your story.

I learned this one early on from the internet (fortunately), and didn't spend much time on it. When the Bear is interested in something or wants my attention, she has no issues with initiating and maintaining eye contact. Otherwise, I totally agree that the real goals are interaction/communication and joint attention.

Never said it to Charlie and our ABA (lovaas agency) team never did that program. I like the idea of having your boys facing you and whatever needs attending to. Not that I would say "face me".....
