Is There Hope?!!!

The cover of today’s issue of Parade magazine found in many Sunday U.S. Newspapers has a cover story on Autism.

The cover headline asks “Is There Hope for Autism?”

Sorry for the language but, it pisses me off that, by even asking the question, the cover implies that the answer might be “No”.

File this under Angry Rant.

    Us parents live in hope for positive coverage. Wonder if that day will ever come.

    Well filed!!

    And not one autistic person is quoted in the whole piece… what other group would be the subject of a story titled “What do we know about X?” without some member of the group being interviewed? (Just picture the equivalent possibilities: “What do we know about Islam?” without a single interview with a Muslim…or “What do we know about old age?” without one quote from anyone over 70!)

    And the unspoken word begged by the cover is “it’s hopeless.”

    Hope had grown grey hairs,
    Hope had mourning on,
    Trenched with tears, carved with cares,
    Hope was twelve hours gone;
    And frightful a nightfall folded rueful a day
    Nor rescue, only rocket and lightship, shone,
    And lives at last were washing away:
    To the shrouds they took,—they shook in the hurling and horrible airs.

    They don’t write like that any more and Suzanne has no right to smite the heirs with her lack of graces

    I found the Parade article to be pathetic. A national publication with 70 million readers should be ashamed of themselves. This was a biased and empty article, which could no doubt squash hope. I think it was strategically timed to offset the growing awareness of the many facets of autism. I encouarage everyone to visit the Parade website, and let them hear our voice!
